Becoming a Freemason

What Freemasonry is, what membership means, and how to join Sir William Harpur Lodge.

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world, with more than 300 years of history in England. It brings together men of different ages, backgrounds and faiths who share values of integrity, friendship, respect and service.

Members meet in Lodges. Each meeting includes a ceremony, staged as a short play, which draws on the traditions of the medieval stonemasons to teach moral lessons. Afterwards members and their guests dine together at the festive board.

Who can join?

Membership of a UGLE Lodge is open to men aged 18 or over, of good character, who believe in a Supreme Being as they understand it. No particular religion is required. Women Freemasons have their own Grand Lodges; see the FAQ.
